GreenSight recently performed training for members of the University of Oklahoma and NOAA, covering classroom familiarization, simulator flights, and real-world swarm operations. By the end of the course, students had flown swarm missions, vertical profiles, and even spelled their initials over the skies of the university.

The training was conducted for members of the Boundary Layer Integrated Sensing and Simulation (BLISS) Group, a research community focused on boundary layer studies, and the Cooperative Institute for Severe and High-Impact Weather Operations and Research (CIWRO), a NOAA/OU cooperative program dedicated to accelerating the productization and adoption of cutting-edge weather monitoring systems.

The training comes as the University of Oklahoma's Oklahoma Climatological Survey was recently contracted by the National Weather Service's Commercial Observations Program to develop the 3D Mesonet, a statewide weather monitoring system that supplements traditional weather towers with remote sensing and autonomous drones to improve forecast accuracy.

As part of this initiative, the University of Oklahoma purchased a Hive and five WISPs to evaluate them for the 3D Mesonet project. If successful, they will be the first GreenSight products purchased by a third party for use in revenue-generating flights — a significant milestone for the company.

Beyond the Mesonet application, the University of Oklahoma also intends to use the WISP for broader research purposes, finding its swarming capability a strong complement to their internally developed CopterSonde sounding drone and suite of remote sensing systems. Researchers especially praised the user-friendly design and robust communications protocols, which enable easy mission planning and real-time data recovery in large drone swarms.
